FAMILIES ARE THE FOUNDATION OF OUR SOCIETY
This is a very exciting time for families in British Columbia. The lawyers of British Columbia anticipate a greatly improved, more accessible and less costly justice system as a result of recent changes to family law made by the Province of British Columbia, crafted with the input of private lawyers and interested groups around the province.
As of March 18, 2013, the old Family Relations Act was replaced by the new Family Law Act. This new legislation completely overhauled the Family Relations Act and now places increased focus on cooperation and resolution for separating parents and spouses.
If you are thinking about getting married, moving in together, having a baby, adopting a child or even deciding if your new partner's child should live with you, you need legal advice about your rights and responsibilities, now and in the future.
If you own properties or businesses or if you have savings, investments or pension plans, you need legal advice before you marry or live together about how your decision will affect what you own now or what you might build up in future. If your marriage is ending, you need to know what to expect and how to move forward in your new life.
If you are separating, what happens to your dog, cat or other non-human family members?
If you are separating and you are wondering whether you should go to court or whether there might be a more cost effective way to wind up your relationship together, you need to know how best to go about it and you need to know how your separation will affect your affairs.
Families are not “one size fits all” and neither are the solutions they need when things go wrong. It all depends on your special circumstances.
Now, there are many more options to successfully resolve your family law dispute, which can give you and your family more control over the process, keep your family matters more private and even choose the person who decides what should happen in your case.
